The history behind the famous Jefferson cup: Thomas Jefferson’s friend and teacher, George Wythe, passed away in 1806, willing him two silver cups . Preferring a more modern style, he set out to have them redesigned. So he sent them off to Virginia silversmith, John Letelier, instructing him to melt the cups and remake them into a more popular tumbler design. Eight low, round-bottomed cups were crafted and returned to Monticello by 1810. These cups were Jefferson’s family favorites. Certainly your family will love them, too! Satin Finish. Pewter. 2 5/16? tall x 3 1/4? diameter. 7 oz. Gift boxed.
